Groundhog Day Books For Speech & Language Development

Groundhog’s Day speech language activities

Groundhog Day is coming up and I am anxiously waiting to see if the groundhog sees his shadow!  I have compiled a list of my favorite Groundhog Day books to help teach your child about this American tradition! As you read each story ask questions related to the book and have your child identify the objects in pictures.  This will also help improve vocabulary.

  1. Groundhog Day by Gail Gibbons

Grade Level: 1st grade to 3rd grade

Learn about the homes and habits of groundhogs while explaining the history behind the superstitions and fun customs of the yearly celebration.

  2. Groundhog Gets a Say by Pamela Curtis Swallow

Grade Level: Kindergarten to 3rd Grade

In this story, the groundhog is tired of only being seen one day out of the year so he decides to tell the world about himself!

  3. Grumpy Groundhog by Maureen Wright

Grade Level: Kindergarten to 2nd grade

The Grumpy Groundhog is a funny rhyming tale about how the grumpy groundhog does not want to leave his bed on the biggest day of the year, Groundhog Day.

  4. Groundhog Day (Rookie Read-About Holidays) by Lisa M. Herrington

Grade Level: Kindergarten to 3rd grade

This fact-filled book picture book introduces children to the festivities and history of Groundhog Day.

  5. Substitute Groundhog by Pat Miller

Grade Level: Kindergarten to 3rd grade

The groundhog is too sick to perform his job so he interviews animals to substitute for him on Groundhog Day.

Do you think the groundhog will see his shadow on Groundhogs Day? Will spring come early or will winter stick around for a little bit longer?
